Talk

What's new

Version 2

2026-09-27

Talk now looks for its own updates here rather than on GitHub, and checks every download against a published checksum.

Improved
  • Talk looks for new versions on its own website now, so updates arrive from the same place as the download.
  • Every update is checked against a published fingerprint before it is installed, so a damaged or altered download is thrown away.
Fixed
  • The update dot and the Help page no longer mention a website that is no longer used.

Version 1

2026-09-26

Private, on-device dictation for Linux, now with reading text aloud.

New
  • Highlight text anywhere and have it read aloud in a natural voice, with a keyboard shortcut you choose or a click on the panel icon.
  • Choose English (British) as the dictation language and it types British spellings.
  • A Speech model page in Settings: see which model you have and fetch a newer one when you want it.
Improved
  • The floating button stays above other windows on Wayland desktops that allow it, and remembers where you put it.
Fixed
  • The panel icon is now a yellow disc, easy to see on a dark panel.
  • Clicks on the floating button are no longer lost when your hand moves slightly, and a double-click no longer switches dictation straight off again.
